THE EXHIBITION

The exhibition CONTRACT is a duo show by architect Roy Secker (SKORKA Architects) and artist Ori Carmely.
The gallery space hosts their mutual interpretation for the concepts of distance, movement and randomality in planning and creation processes. In the creative process of this exhibition the architect has transformed himself into a client, laying his corpus of work to the external reading of the young artist.
In the relationship between the two, the artist was asked to expropriate architectural product and process and operate in a given diameter, while utilizing classical architectural tools. The architect responds to the reading use tools uncommon in the everyday architectural act.
The course is completed in a role reversal between the planner committed to his surroundings and the artist loyal to his position as a creative agent. It’s a dialogue between two worlds leaning on each other for inquiry, parting and progress.

The exhibition title is based on the basic reduction of a defined relationship. The contract is empty as it is binding. It becomes meaningful through a series of gestures of exposure and articulation between the client and the operator.

In a video presented in slow motion, the artist unravels the order in the logistic courtyard of the Interdisciplinary Center, an ex-territory where the maintenance crew have migrated, due to construction development in the campus. The revealed ground is transformed into a racetrack made out of construction material scraps where the maintenance crew are racing in their service vehicle.

the architect directs at the screening an old photo documenting an intervention he has created several years ago by the statute ‘the valley guard’ (a statue of Alexander Zeid situated in front of the Sheikh Avrek tomb). He raised a mirror in front of the guard who set eyes toward east, and for the first time showed him the sunset.

Those works and others use appropriation, re-make and mockumentary techniques. They contrast in a stream of reactions old and new, static and dynamic, accuracy and spontaneity. The interpretive framework renews modes of observing processes of planning and production.
